CONCRETE GRINDING · SYDNEY METRO
Industrial diamond grinding for floor prep, restoration and coating removal. HEPA dust extraction on every job. Profile delivered to CSP spec.
WHAT IS CONCRETE GRINDING
Concrete grinding is the mechanical process of removing the top layer of a concrete slab using industrial diamond-tooled grinders. It's used to remove old coatings (paint, sealers, tile adhesive, glue, epoxy), prepare concrete for a new floor coating, and smooth rough or uneven surfaces. Diamond grinding creates a rough textured profile that enhances adhesion for anything applied afterwards — providing a strong mechanical bond and virtually eliminating peeling or delamination.
WHEN YOU NEED GRINDING
Paint, epoxy, glue, mastic, tile adhesive, vinyl backing, carpet glue — gone, with no residue and no chemical strippers.
DIY epoxy, sealers, polished concrete prep — we open the slab to the correct CSP for the system going on top.
Uneven slab joints at thresholds, footpath lips, and warehouse floor seams smoothed flush.
Restore a worn or stained concrete floor without applying a new coating — sometimes the bare slab itself is the finish you want.
Routing and cleaning joints and cracks for sealants, repair compounds, or epoxy crack injection.
Prep substrate for tile, vinyl, timber or other floor finishes — flat, profiled, no contamination.
WHY IT MATTERS
When you see a DIY or amateur floor coating fail, it's almost always because the surface was never prepped correctly. Painting or coating concrete that hasn't been ground is the single biggest reason epoxy floors fail within 12 months. Concrete is porous and contains contaminants — curing compounds, sealers, oil, dirt — that prevent coatings from bonding. Grinding removes the top 1–2 mm of the slab, exposes fresh concrete, opens the pores, and creates a textured profile the coating can grip into mechanically and chemically. Skip this step and the coating will peel within a year.
CSP 1–9
The International Concrete Repair Institute defines Concrete Surface Profiles (CSP) on a scale of 1 to 9. Most epoxy systems require CSP 2–3 (lightly textured, like 60-grit sandpaper). Polyurethane and thicker industrial systems require CSP 3–5.
King of Seal grinds to the correct profile for each system — no shortcuts, no under-grinding, no over-grinding.
WHY HIRE A PROFESSIONAL
Concrete dust contains crystalline silica, a Class 1 carcinogen. WorkSafe NSW requires proper PPE, dust extraction and exposure monitoring. We run HEPA-rated extraction equipment as standard on every job.
Professional grinding requires industrial planetary grinders, multiple diamond tooling sets, and HEPA dust extraction. Hire and consumables can quickly exceed what a professional charges for the job done properly.
A typical garage is ground in 2–3 hours professionally vs a full day DIY — with a cleaner result and no dust through the rest of the house.
Under-grinding causes coating failure within months; over-grinding wastes material and weakens the slab. Getting the right CSP for the system being applied is technical work.
